Enabling L-series USB support in VMware
Tutorial 3: Enabling L-series USB support in VMware
ESX3.x
VMware’s ESX 3.x platform does not normally support USB on virtual machines. However, since vSpace and
the L-series access devices transparently redirect USB to the virtual machine itself, VMware ESX doesn’t have
to be involved in generating USB support to a Windows XP virtual machine.
To enable L-series Windows XP USB support from a VMware ESX virtual machine, you just need to copy
Windows XP’s seven "USB core files" into the virtual machine OS image prior to installing NComputing vSpace.
These seven files can be found on the standard Windows XP Professional install CD.
The files to copy to the virtual machine file system and then rename are:
Filename on WinXP install CD File on C:\Windows\system32\drivers directory
usbd.sy_ -> usbd.sys
usb.in_ -> usb.inf
usbmon.dl_ -> usbmon.dll
usbport.in_ -> usbport.inf
usbport.sy_ -> usbport.sys
usbohci.sy_ -> usbohci.sys
usbuhci.sy_ -> usbuhci.sys
After performing all the file copy/renames, simply install NComputing vSpace on the VM, restart it, and
USB support should now work from the L-series device
